Register a .io domain
A .io address has become shorthand for a software product, an API or a developer tool. That association is useful when it is true and misleading when it is not. Register the .io when your audience reads it as a technical signal and the renewal fits the brand. Choose something else when you need the address customers already guess.
- 1 to 10 year terms
- Privacy supported
- Transfers both ways
Good to Know:
This page does not list prices. Registration and renewal prices change, so the search result and the checkout page show the current price for the name you choose. Nothing here is a quote or an offer. The .io extension is the country-code domain for the British Indian Ocean Territory. Its popularity has little to do with the territory and everything to do with the way developers read the letters. That gap between the registry and the audience is the whole decision.
What .io actually signals
The registry is administered through Nic.io, with Identity Digital as the backend provider. There is no residency requirement, so the territory has very little to do with who registers a .io name.
What the letters signal is a convention built by developers: input/output, a product, an API, a tool. SaaS companies, developer platforms and technical consultancies adopted .io because it was short, available and read as part of the software world.
A signal only works when the audience shares the code. A developer tool on .io reads as normal. A bakery, plumber or law practice on .io reads as a mistake to customers who have never heard the convention. The extension is not a shortcut to being technical, and it does not make a weak name stronger.
When .io is the right call
Register the .io when most of these are true:
- Your buyers are developers, technical teams or software companies.
- The name is short enough to type and say without spelling it out.
- The .com is taken, and .io reads as a deliberate choice rather than a fallback.
- You have checked the renewal price and can carry it for several years.
- The brand would still make sense if the .io fashion cooled.
It is the wrong call when your customers expect a .com, when the name only works because it is cheap in year one, or when you are registering it to avoid choosing a better name. A .io does not fix a forgettable word.
If you are deciding between .io and .ai, the question is not which is newer. It is which audience you are actually addressing. The .io and .ai comparison walks through that.
Where to see the price
A .io registration and a .io renewal are separate charges. The first-year price you see in an offer is not necessarily the price you will pay when the domain renews, and the gap can be larger on a country extension than on .com.
This page does not quote a number. The search result and the checkout page show the current registration and renewal prices for the exact name you want, including whether it is a standard registration or a premium listing.
Email, hosting and other services are separate products. Nothing here is a bundle or a promotion. For the vocabulary of domain costs, read what affects domain pricing.
How .io registrations work
These are the current rules for .io, as listed in the .io help article:
- Registration and renewal terms: 1 to 10 years.
- Who can register: anyone, on a first-come, first-served basis.
- Name rules: 3 to 63 characters, letters, numbers and hyphens. A hyphen cannot be the first or last character. Special characters are not allowed, and internationalized domain names are supported.
- Renewals: with auto-renew on, the charge is attempted on the expiration date. If it fails, the domain is parked. If it is not renewed within 40 days after expiration, it is cancelled and removed from the account.
- Transfers: moving a .io in or away is supported, and a transfer lock is available.
- Privacy: Domain Privacy is supported and added automatically to eligible domains.
- DNS: 1 to 13 nameservers, with IPv4, IPv6 and DNSSEC supported.
Registry rules and provider policies can change. Treat this as a summary of current practice, not a permanent guarantee.
How to check availability without wasting time
- Search the exact name first, not a variant you invented.
- If it is taken, check the .com and the one alternative you would actually use.
- Read the result. A standard registration and a premium listing are different purchases.
- Do not buy a hyphenated or misspelled .io just to stay on .io. A weak address is weak on any extension.
If your first choice is gone, compare the realistic options before you settle.
The .io fit test
Answer five questions honestly.
| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Will your buyers recognise .io as a software address? | The convention only helps when the audience shares it. |
| Can you say the name once and have it typed correctly? | Short names survive spoken introductions. |
| Is the .com already taken? | A .io is usually a choice, not a default. |
| Does the renewal fit the next three years? | Year one is not the ongoing cost. |
| Would the name still work on another extension? | If it only works as .io, the name is doing too much. |
Reading the result
- Four or five yes, and the name is available: register it.
- Available, but the renewal is uncomfortable: shorten the name or compare .com and .ai before committing.
- Not available: read the taken-domain guide and choose a name you can defend.
Who this is for
This page is for developers, SaaS founders, API products, technical consultancies and open-source projects with a commercial arm. It is also for the owner who has a .com in mind but wants to know whether .io is a credible alternative.
It is less useful for local service businesses, retail shops and anyone whose customers would need the extension explained. Those readers are usually better served by .com or a country extension that matches the market.
Before you register
- Trademark conflicts. A quick search is sensible. It is not legal advice, and it does not guarantee you are clear to use the name.
- Renewal budget. Check the renewal price before you register, not after.
- Privacy. Domain Privacy is supported on .io and added automatically to eligible domains, but confirm it at checkout.
- Email. If the domain will carry email, set it up and test the address before you print it anywhere.
- Fashion risk. .io is popular with a technical audience. Popularity can move, and a brand should not depend on it.
- Transfer lock. Keep it on unless you are actively moving the domain.
